Three juniors fished the first leg of the junior summer league at Rhyl Foryd on Sunday 27th April. Rain earlier in the day, and low lying cloud, which was obscuring the top of the sky tower may have put a few off.
The match started 3 hours before high water, on a 24.3 ft tide, and as the first casts went in, the estuary was beginning to flood, prime time for the Flounders.
Things were quiet for the first hour, and then a rattling bite on Toms rod broke the boredom. All went quiet for a minute or two, before another good rattle signalled the fish was still there, and Tom reeled in a good sized Flounder. The fish was measured at 40 cms and we decided to weigh it as well as it could be a new pb for Tom.
It tipped the scales to 01-06-12, beating his previous pb by 12 drams! Smiley faces all round.
Next to catch was Elliot, another good bite, which was left to develop resulted in a Flounder measured at 35 cms.
It didnt take long before Toms rod was going again. This time the fish was measured at 37 cms.
Evan was still struggling, so we donated him some crab, to compliment the lug and Mackeral he already had.
At this point, i had to dash home, having left the prize money, and Elliots trophies, from last weeks presentation night.
On my return, Tom had another fish to his name, this time a smaller fish, measuring 25 cms,
and he was watching as another bite developed.
The rod went again but unfortunately, upon reeling in, the fish wasnt hooked. This happened a couple more times, and Elliot and Evan had the same experience, before Tom reeled in his fourth fish of the day, another Flounder measuring 39 cms.
Tom missed another bite, before three lads came down and launched a dinghy, right between our rods. Well, we were set up on a slipway.
This effectively killed the sport, and the drizzle started just to add to the misery.
The match finished at 4pm. Tom took the honours and £7.50 1st prize, with 141 cms, Elliot was second with 35 cms for £5 and Evan got the third prize of £2.50 for his efforts.
All fish were returned to fight another day.
The sections next match, is at Deganwy on Sunday 18th May. Meeting in the footbridge carpark at 11-30. The match times sweety from 12-00 until 15-00.
