| Boat match no5, half way through the league already, it’s amazing how quickly the time goes, anyway down to the match with windmap giving a half decent forecast on Saturday for the following day prospects looked good, Sunday morning was warm calm with blue skies, I rang Holyhead coastguard at 7-oam for the latest inshore forecast as normal only to be told they are working to rule and dealing with emergencies only in their campaign for fairer pay so we had to rely on the previous day’s windmap forecast, we decided once again to launch the boats at Moel y Don in the Straits, for those who don’t know it’s the slipway across from Port Dinorwic. It looks like this slipway and access point is now secure for public use after a campaign by local’s and other’s against it’s sale to a private buyer so a big thanks to all who were involved in that successful campaign. No limits were put on the boats today so after launching they could go out of the Straits on either side, as it happens all five boats decided to follow Gwynnie on Goldilocks to his secret mark a couple of miles off Llanddwyn island, this mark allegedly holds various types of ray, turbot, brill, huss, plaice, smoothhounds, tope and all the gurnards with tubs and greys to well over specimen size, oh and did I mention just the odd dog?
Bob and Frank on Basshunter making their way up the Straits at the start of the match. Owie and Elwyn bach putting their boat Garramma 11 through its paces in the flat calm conditions in Caernarfon bay.
We all stopped off for a quick dip to catch some fresh bait, they came in one’s and two’s and after about ten minutes we were off to Gwynnie secret mark full of expectations. We fished the mark for about an hour and sixty to seventy dogs later we decided to up anchor and drift to try get away from them yet we were still hooking them all be at a reduced rate, we did manage a dragonet and a half decent huss of eleven pound something plus some undersize dabs and grey gurnards but all in all it was pretty dire, we shot over close in to Llanddwyn hoping for a ray or smoothy but the dogs were very active here too. With low water in the Straits just before 1-0pm it had been our original plan to return to the Straits for the flood so that’s were we headed only stopping at the courtesy buoys at the entrance to Caernarfon to try for a plaice or flounder, we gave it about half an hour without a sniff, we were really struggling to get any sort of a species count so we headed down to the marks around Pwllfannogl, we did fare a bit better there landing various wrasse a conger and some other bits and pieces. Eventually all the boats came down to this end of the Straits to catch their minis and bits. At the weigh-in Goldilocks had done the business catching thirteen species with one specimen and top weight for a total of 62 points so well done to Gwynnie, Fishy and Steve, Rosea were in second spot with 9 species and two over specimen size and second best weight giving them 52 points, Basshunter was third with 9 species, Goldilocks took the heaviest roundfish pool with a conger of just under twelve pounds, the heaviest flat pool will be carried over to the next match as there were no flats above minimum size caught. At the end of the day it wasn’t brilliant fishing but it was a great day to be out on the water, enjoyed it
